On Friday, our Holy Cross Tigers faced off against the Saint Augustine Purple Knights. The tigers started off with a rocky start but didn’t give up. After the first quarter, the tigers were down by double digits with St. Aug having 23 and Holy Cross with 11. The tigers entered the second quarter hopeful to turn the game around. In the second quarter the Purple Knights did their best to hold off the Tigers. Both teams scored 13 points in the second quarter leaving the Tigers down 24-36. HC started off the first half slow, but quickly gained momentum. During the third quarter, the Tigers had their best performance of the night. The tigers scored 21 points and made key defensive plays. Holy Cross’ defense managed to hold St. Aug to only 8 points in the third quarter. The tigers went into the fourth quarter with a chip on their shoulder and a game to win. During the fourth the Tigers were able to pull it together and score 17. Overall the Tigers played an extremely balanced game.
This allowed Holy Cross to win 62 to 54 and become the number one team in district. This was important because this was the first time the Tigers were able to beat Saint Augustine at their gym in 14 years. Holy Cross improves to 23-5 on the season with a 6-1 district record. The tigers were led by Seniors Myles Sanders and Kalil Thomas, who each had 14 points apiece. When asked about how he felt, Jeremy Lindsey, class of ’20, said “We have done this before, so we knew we had this in us, we had fight in us. We believed we could do it and we did.” Holy Cross’ head coach can be quoted saying “We got some crucial stops down the stretch and my guys fought.’’ The tigers look to put this game behind them and keep the momentum rolling for the upcoming games, taking it just one game at a time. This Friday the Tigers face off against the Jesuit Blue Jays at Holy Cross for 7 p.m. in what looks to be a promising match up.
