  • On September 5th, 2005, Katie Couric made her debut as the first female anchor who went solo. Couric was born on January 7, 1957, in Arlington, Virginia, and graduated from the University of Virginia, in 1979. That same year, she began her career in journalism. Her debut was very hyped because it was being broadcasted on CBS Evening News. Later on, Couric would be the anchor for CBS and managing editor of CBS Evening News. Katie Couric’s salary was a whopping 15 million per year after, these earnings made her the highest paid TV news anchor of her time.
  • On September 6th, 1915, the first tank was produced. This prototype tank was called “Little Willie”. Little Willie was not an instant success considering it weighed 14 tons, constantly got stuck in trenches. While driving over rough terrain, Little Willie’s top speed was just two miles per hour. The creators of “Little Willies were Colonels in the British army; Ernest Swinton and William Hankey. They brought the idea of an armored vehicle with conveyor belt mechanism to greater there advantage in the trench warfare of World War I.
  • On September 7th, 1813, the United States of America was given the nickname “Uncle Sam.” During the War of 1812, a man named Samuel Wilson would supply the army with beef. The soldiers would call the beef they ate, “Uncle Sams”. The newspaper of that time came out with an article that accepted the United States nickname of “Uncle Sam”. Uncle Sam became popular when a political cartoonist of the name Thomas Nast got a hold of it and made it known in his cartoons in the late 1860’s and 1870’s. Uncle Sam continued to grow and evolve later. Nast gave Uncle Sam a white beard and a suit that consisted of stars and stripes.
  • On September 8, 1974, Gerald Ford, the president of the time, pardoned Richard Nixon. Nixon was pardoned for any crimes he had committed while he was in office. After Nixon was pardoned, the Watergate scandal broke out and proved that Nixon did illegal things while campaigning for his reelection.
