Tiger Basketball Team Falls Short in CYO Tourney

By: Jeremy Lindsey, '20

Last week was the annual basketball tournament that is held in New Orleans known as the CYO tournament. This is a 5-day tournament and is always an honor and privilege to be apart of it as many teams aspire to get the invite. This year the games were played at Shaw High School, Jesuit High School, Holy Cross School, and De La Salle High School. It was a great tournament, but it didn’t end as well as Holy Cross would have liked it to end. On Wednesday, December 4, Holy Cross had a huge win over St. Thomas Aquinas. Jeremy Lindsey led the troop with 15 points being the highest scorer on the team. Everyone on the Tigers’ team got a chance to play as HC had a very strong lead with the end result being 73-35. Freshman, Devin Harris said, “The team played well together, and they all played as well as they could, so we were able to come out with the victory.”

Thursday’s game for the Holy Cross Tigers was a little more challenging. Lee Magnet High School gave the Tigers a run for their money. It was back and forth the whole game until the fourth quarter when Lee went on a run and ended up beating the Tigers 75-64. Aaron Ursin led the troops with 18 points this game, but he needed a little more help to beat the Patriots. It was a rough game, but HC had the chance to redeem themselves on Saturday against De La Salle High School. The Tigers had an early lead in the first quarter of Saturday’s game against the Cavaliers and going into halftime. Sadly, they struggled to score in the third quarter, only scoring 2 points. The Cavaliers came back in the fourth quarter forcing the game into overtime. Michael Crossley led the troops with 21 points, but it wasn’t enough. In the final seconds of overtime, the Holy Cross point guard had an open shot to win the game, but he missed the three pointers. Senior, Hunter Hidalgo said, “We didn’t play to the best of our potential which is why we lost the 2 games that we lost,” when asked about the Tigers’ overall performance in the tournament. The Tigers play again on Monday at East Jefferson High School. Come out and support the your boys in blue and gold! GO TIGERS!!!!!
