Holy Cross returns to the winner's circle for the first time in 21 years. The Tigers were lead by senior Jordan Garett and freshman Nicholas Michael.
The Tigers out scored Archbishop Shaw 196.5 to 179.5. The Tigers also placed 3 state runners up - Juniors, Jordan Berges and Christian Chetta, and Sophomore, Stephen Kleamenakis.
It's the first state wrestling title for the Tigers since 1988.
It also brings back memories of past glory, when Holy Cross ruled the wrestling world. Dating back to 1945, Holy Cross was the dominant program. The legendary Brother Melchior Polowy assembled a band of young men that brought a brand of physical wrestling to the mat which was hard to match.
The Tigers amassed 22 state titles under Brother Melchior, including 20 in a row from 1945-1965. In the 1980's under coach Ed Kavanaugh, the Tigers won state championships in '83 and '88.
"I've been thinking for a long time what I'd say when this happens," Holy Cross Head Coach Eric Desormeaux said. "The look on these boys' faces says it all."
