Foreign Language Department

The purpose of the Holy Cross Foreign Language department is to teach an appreciation of the other languages in the world. Holy Cross offers two foreign languages: French and Spanish.

SPANISH  DEPARTMENT

The Spanish Language Department is dedicated to teaching students not only the language of Spanish, but also the culture of the people and their nations.

Several students from all levels of Spanish have been to Spain in 2005 and Costa Rica in 2006.  These 9- day trips enhance language practice and ability, enthusiasm for learning new cultures, education of history and culture, and fun.

The Spanish language is taught through TPR (Total Physical Response), where students are taught in Spanish and respond in the language.  The ¡Exprésate! Book and Video series is also used for levels 1-3 to add practice and examples to the grammar structures and vocabulary taught.  Projects are given each semester involving creations such as house models/ sports arenas with labeled vocabulary, TPR stories with pictures, labeled maps, magazines, debates, etc.

A Holy Cross Education is a process which challenges a young man to learn habits of the mind and habits of the heart: the competence to see and the courage to act, to think critically, to make informed choices, to take risks, and, to always own up the consequences of his actions.
