The Holy Cross Band Program teaches music to the students to make them the complete musicians.....

In Band Classes, we incorporate music theory with the instrumental instruction in order for the Holy Cross musician to have more of a college preparatory education.

A Holy Cross Education is a process which challenges a young man to learn habits of the mind and habits of the heart: the competence to see and the courage to act, to think critically, to make informed choices, to take risks, and, to always own up the consequences of his actions.

Courses in this department:

High School

Advanced Band II     This course is designed for the advanced wind high school musician. Students are instructed through rehearsal and performances of band literature capable of the college band level. Emphasis is placed on the ensemble playing including ensemble blend, technique and musical expression. Full Credit Course

Advanced Band I     This course is a wind instrument course for the intermediate high school musician. The study of the technical aspect of wind playing is continues. Advanced scales (minor) are introduced. Musical expression is further explored. Music theory is expanded through the study of  intervals, transpositions and chords.  Full Credit Course

Instrumental Techniques     This course is a wind instrument course designed for the eight grade musician or ninth grade student who needs remedial work. Musical fundamentals are reviewed along with the technical playing habits of the instruments and basic music theory. Emphasis is placed on tone production and technical development. Full Credit Course

Applied Music II     This course is designed for the high school advanced percussion students. The study of more advanced performance techniques on the percussion instruments is undertaken. Music theory through chords is discussed. Full Credit Course

Applied Music I     This Course is designed for the eight and ninth grade percussion student. Covered in this class are the fundamental performance techniques on the: snare drum, tympani, bass drum, melodic instruments, cymbals, and traps. Fundamentals of music theory are also covered. Full Credit Course

Music Survey    A general overview of music history from the Middle Ages through the present is covered. Students are also exposed to the fundamentals of musical notation and are instructed in the basic performance practices on the Renaissance wind instrument, the recorder. It is the goal of this course to broaden the student's appreciation for the "Art of Music."

 

Middle School

 

Beginning Band    This course is designed for those students who have never played a musical instrument of those second year students who may need remedial work. Musical fundamentals, embouchure development and tone production are emphasized. Full Credit Course

Intermediate Band I     This course is designed for those students who have completed the Beginning Band course or its equivalent. Emphasis is placed on rhythmic accuracy, major scales, technical development and various time signatures. A development of musical expression and the fundamentals of music theory are stressed. Full Credit Course

Intermediate Band II    This course is designed for those students who have completed the Intermediate Band I course or its equivalent. The study of rhythm, scales and time signatures is expanded. Musical expression and music theory are stressed. An emphasis is placed on technical facility and range of notes.  Full Credit Course
