Social Studies Department

The Social Studies department at Holy Cross School educates students in the social sciences throughout grades 5-12.

The 5 faculty members that make up the department have over 130 years of combined teaching experience. Over half those years have been spent educating young men in an all boys setting.

Material is presented to students in a variety of ways, as our faculty uses methods such as lectures, class discussions, individual and group projects, field trips, guest speakers, and internet research.

The goal of the department is to teach not only the history of the state, country, and world we live in, but to also relate these facts and ideas to both the present day we live in and the future that is ahead of us.

"I believe that education should be used to develop children in several aspects of life. As an educator, I cannot focus only on the academic development of each student but the physical and social development as well. Education must be used to develop the whole person, not a part.

Students must feel comfortable in their learning environment, not only with me but also with each other. Students must know that at any time they may express themselves without fear of ridicule or repercussions. By creating this type of atmosphere, the students are able to communicate their ideas. Students must understand that learning is a two way street. It is my responsibility to teach, but it is also their responsibility to learn."
