Headmaster's Welcome, Mr. Charles DiGange, '64
Masters, 46 years in education, 31 years at Holy Cross

Welcome to Holy Cross School. From our humble beginnings in 1849 to the magnificent campus we dedicated in 2010, we have been able to offer a holistic approach to education for the past 165 years. In the tradition of our beloved founder, Blessed Basile Moreau, C.S.C., at Holy Cross we educate the whole person—mind, body, heart and soul. With an abundance of extracurricular activities from our award-winning debate and robotics teams to our highly acclaimed Tiger Band and athletics teams, all exist to form the whole person. Our extensive retreat program and service projects complete the formation of heart and soul.

Holy Cross is regarded as one of the most unique in metropolitan New Orleans. When we expand our “Boys to Men” mission in the fall of 2015, the addition of grades prekindergarten through fourth will structure Holy Cross as the only prekindergarten through twelfth grade all-boys Catholic school in the greater New Orleans area.

As an alumnus of the class of 1964, I am extremely proud to have experienced being a student, a member of the faculty, and now Headmaster of this outstanding institution. I look forward to continuing the mission of Father Moreau and shaping the lives of the next generation of Holy Cross men.

From our founder, Father Basile Moreau, we have been charged with the Mission “We do not want our students to be ignorant of anything they should know.” In order to fulfill this mission we have aligned our curriculum to begin the college-readiness journey in the 5th grade

In 2015, we will begin this journey with our PK4 students. Our teachers work together as department and grade level teams in order to review individual student data and design curriculum to ensure students are prepared for the challenges of the next grade. One example of this is the use of the Pre-AP Springboard program in the 5th- 9th grades. This program sets the foundation for future AP courses.

Our Curriculum is designed to prepare students to be successful in college. The first step is ensuring college admittance by scoring high on standardized test. This preparation begins in the 5th grade through the ACT Aspire program. Students develop critical thinking and problem solving skills that will help them build on their prior knowledge. Our one-to-one laptop program is one of the tools used to reach this goal through student research and projects students develop higher order thinking skills. At every level students are challenged to strive to excel academically.

Beginning in the 5th grade at Holy Cross, students embrace a rigorous course of studies that provides them with the foundation for academic success. The Holy Cross enhanced course of studies is based on college and career readiness standards identified by the State of Louisiana as well as ACT. Standards-referenced assessment ensures that students are striving to achieve challenging standards that are accepted by colleges as students are prepared for success in the global workplace.

Each year individual student assessment data is disaggregated and evaluated by faculty and administration to support data driven decision making. Research shows that value-added analysis provides a more accurate way to measure student academic progress. According to the system for Teacher and Student Advancement, “Value-added analysis tracks the same student over time and compares his/her test scores over several years.” The ability to track individual student growth is a strong indicator of student and course of studies success.

Faculty and administration identify and implement school wide initiatives targeting successful research based practice. Two important recent initiatives are Discovery Walks and the AdvancED Accreditation processes. These programs provide guidance to assure that Holy Cross provides a world class learning experience for our students.

Opportunities for professional growth are identified based on classroom observations, teacher surveys and test data. Teachers attend local, state and national conferences. These teachers provide in-house training for the faculty. These opportunities are part of our professional learning communities which provide the basis for collegial conversations.
