Student Research Poll

Holy Cross Students and Parents:
This past fall saw the majority of students and teachers busy with science fair projects as part of our science classes. It’s been several years (mid-to-late 80s) since students formally participated in the Science and Engineering Fair (SEF) events. The culmination of work this first semester was the Holy Cross SEF which was held on January 20, 2012. Some notable tidbits from the science fair: • 200+ projects from middle and high school grades • 11 projects qualified for the GNOSEF, 2 of which received awards • 1 project qualified for the LSEF, receiving a 3rd place category award
The students did a lot of work, and while that is as it should be, it was not without the help of the teachers who gave guidance and feedback, and their parents and family who supported students as the projects took shape. Behind the scenes, there were many people who were instrumental to the success of the event. We would like to thank the judges. They came from several universities (Loyola, Tulane, UNO, Xavier, LSU) but the largest contingency of judges came from our own ranks - alumni of Holy Cross School - who are in industry positions, own their own companies, higher education, or government.
The tone from the judges was consistent. They were glad that HC was moving back into student research. All were pleased with the number and quality of the projects.
While student research and science fairs have been around for over 60 years, their relevance is still obvious in looking at the Next Generation Science Standards and the emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). This recent venture into SEF projects is the beginning of Holy Cross School moving to the front of pre-college student research. Over the next few years, we hope to see more participation and better representation at regional, state, and even international level competitions.
In addition to working in the science classes, students will be able to work on projects as an extra-curricular club (similar to our Web Team). This allows students time to focus on research within the confines of a small group, receive more individualized attention, and access to available resources.
In order to help us gather information and get the program started, we have set up an online survey. Please take the 2 minute survey. It will be active only for 2 weeks and your input will be invaluable.
Thank you for your participation and the cooperation with the survey. We hope to see a viable and productive student research program take root here at HC.
